SS: Immerse more study less
short bursts of consistency > long, inconsistent efforts, singular words that seem plural & the subjunctive with “aunque”
SPANISH SUNDAYS
Study Tip 🧠 → immerse more study less
Spend more time listening to podcasts, speaking in short bursts and watching Spanish content.
It makes Spanish more fun and helps you make progress faster.
More consistent short bursts of immersion instead of infrequent, longer study sessions.
Beginner 📈 → singular words that seem plural
English speakers regularly get this wrong because it is wrong in English. Let’s look at an example to start off:
La gente es amable → The people are nice
Las personas son amables → The people are nice
Why does la gente take es (singular) when it refers to many people?
Because the word is grammatically singular, it’s about separating the word from the idea.
It’s the same rule for every “group” word:
la gente (es)
la familia (es)
el grupo (es)
el equipo (es)
el pueblo (can mean “people” as well as “town”) (es)
If the word is singular → use singular conjugation.
If the word is plural → use plural conjugation.
Examples:
Mi familia es increíble → My family are incredible
Este grupo es muy majo → This group is very cool
La gente trabaja mucho → People work hard
Las personas trabajan mucho → People work hard
Majo = cool (Spanish slang)
Once you get used to matching the verb with the word (not the idea), this becomes natural.
Advanced 🚀 → the subjunctive with “aunque”
It’s not difficult but a great one to learn. Just remember these two rules:
Aunque + indicative (normal) → although / even though
Aunque + subjunctive → even if
Examples:
Tienes que trabajar duro aunque te sientes (indicative) cansado.
You have to work hard even though you feel tired.Tienes que trabajar duro aunque te sientas (subjunctive) cansado.
You have to work hard even if you feel tired.
Another pair:
Tengo que ir al colegio aunque llueve (indicative).
I have to go to school even though it’s raining.Tengo que ir al colegio aunque llueva (subjunctive).
I have to go to school even if it’s raining.
